Sarpa Bali Puja

Honouring the Divine Legacy of Naga Worship

In the sacred lands of Kerala and Konkan—gifted to Parashurama by Varuna himself—lies a profound tradition that intertwines Purana, spirituality, and ancestral reverence. These lands, once reclaimed from the sea, were home to celestial beings known as Nagas. In a divine pact, Parashurama sought permission from these devatas so humans could dwell in this salt-rich terrain. The Nagas agreed—on the condition that every household offer worship to them. Thus, Naga worship became intrinsic to the soul of this region.

The Nagas—divine, non-venomous are distinct from the earthly Sarpa—manifest in three realms:

  • Akasha Nagas: dwellers of the heavens
  • Antariksha Nagas: beings of the celestial ether
  • Bhumi Nagas (Kuzhi Nagas): guardians beneath the earth

At the heart of this tradition stands Nagaraja, the king of Nagas, and his divine consort Nagayakshini, revered as a protector, a giver of prosperity, progeny, and spiritual power. She is none other than the embodiment of Kundalini Shakti, and is worshipped in various forms across India, including as Mansa Devi in the North.

In Melpazhur Mana, within Adi Sankara Nilayam, Nagayakshini is enshrined as a Jeevit Vigraha, a living deity whose form continues to grow subtly over time. She is a mystical presence graced with immense spiritual potency.
